FREDERICTON, NB – July 10, 2025

The Fredericton Region Museum is pleased to announce two new artists-in-residence who will be present in the museum this summer during the months of July and August: Cat Candow (July 14 – 27) and Rob Johns (August 4 – 17). The museum is also excited to host a writer-in-residence: Jordan Trethewey, who commenced his residency in May and will be present in the museum on August 16 and September 13 (1 to 4 pm).

Cat Candow is a mixed media and textile artist who began practicing fibre arts during her childhood in Germany. She arrived in Canada as an exchange student and went on to study Fashion Design at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, after which she spent 3 years making theatre costumes in England. Cat is now based in Fredericton, where she creates art in a variety of mediums, including lace weaving, washable markers, and illustration.

Rob Johns is a Fredericton-based oil painter, science illustrator, and ecologist. Rob’s first career was in the natural sciences. He holds a PhD in Biology, and worked for several years as an ecologist with Natural Resources Canada. His illustrations have been published alongside scientific research articles. Rob draws upon this unique background when seeking inspiration for his art. A largely self-taught painter, his paintings highlight the beauty and depth of the natural world, focusing primarily on wildlife and landscapes. Through his paintings, he explores how light and colour impact our perception of nature.

Jordan Trethewey is a poet and writer who joined the Fredericton Region Museum in May as Writer-in-Residence. As a St Thomas University graduate and past City of Fredericton Poet Laureate (2021-2024), Jordan’s impacts on Fredericton’s literary community are countless. Jordan has published multiple books and poetry collections; his work has also been featured in national and international literary journals. When writing, Jordan draws inspiration from the people around him. As part of his residency, Jordan is writing a historical fiction novel with elements from the First World War. Visit the museum on August 16, and September 13 (1-4 pm) to meet Jordan and learn more about his novel-in-progress!

While there, you can also order a picnic lunch on the balcony in partnership with The Squeeze or enjoy live performances of traditional Scottish music as part of the Celtic Celebration Summer Concert Series: Pipers on the Balcony every Wednesday (12:15 – 12:45), Frantically Atlantic selected Sundays (1 – 2pm), and MEKA  (August 12 & 22, 12:15 to 12:45).
