Opening of the Fredericton Region Museum’s Fredericton 175th Plus Exhibition

(Fredericton, NB – August 4, 2023 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE) 2023 marks the 175th anniversary of Fredericton’s incorporation as a City. In honour of this, the Fredericton Region Museum welcomes the public to the opening of their special commemorative exhibition, entitled Fredericton 1848: The Celestial City – La Cité céleste. This event will take place on Wednesday August 9 at 5 pm.

Since time immemorial there has been much happening on the piece of land we now call Fredericton. Building upon layers of rich history, this new exhibition highlights what life was like 175 years ago. Through artefacts drawn from the museum’s rich collection, imagine how the environment, civic duty, religion, commerce, education, governance, and social life have changed. How does this relate to Fredericton today? These are the questions that have guided the development of this exhibition.

Against an artefact-rich backdrop, visitors are also invited to explore the photography of Gary Weekes, who has documented with his camera lens how the city landscape compares to 175 years ago. While many of the landmarks have disappeared over time, there are elements that remain very much the same.

This commemorative exhibition has been made possible through financial support provided by Canadian Heritage, as well as the City of Fredericton, Province of New Brunswick, and the York-Sunbury Historical Society. Come join us on August 9 at 5pm as we celebrate Fredericton’s rich and diverse heritage.

The Fredericton Region Museum is open Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and Sundays 12 noon to 5pm. We are also now open Thursday evenings until 8pm (in conjunction with the Garrison Market).
